Chataway Tenders Resignation from Cabinet
John Chataway, Minister of Environment and Labour and Human Resources, today asked Premier John Hamm to relieve him of his duties as a member of the Executive Council.
"I am honoured and wish to thank Premier Hamm for having appointed me to his cabinet," said Mr. Chataway.
"As is known, last February, I suffered a burst aneurism in my brain. Thanks to the work of the outstanding medical professionals of the Halifax Infirmary, I survived a six-hour operation. Quite simply, this operation saved my life. It had been my hope that my illness would be of short duration. In fact, I was in hospital for some 11 weeks following surgery, and have since undergone four further operations. I am advised and am grateful for the fact that, unlike many so afflicted, I have been making a remarkable recovery. Last June, I resumed many of my duties as MLA for Chester-St. Margaret's--while continuing my recovery.
"While my doctors indicate that my progress has been remarkable, at meetings this week, they advised me that for a few more months at least, it would be unhealthy for me to undertake my full duties as both an MLA and a cabinet minister. In that circumstance, clearly, my priority is to serve my constituents in Chester-St. Margaret's. Accordingly, I have today asked Premier Hamm to relieve me of my duties as a cabinet minister and member of the Executive Council. At the same time, I have indicated to him that I intend, effective immediately, to resume my full duties as MLA for Chester-St. Margaret's.
"At this time, I wish to thank the premier, together with my colleagues in cabinet and in the House, and especially my friends, supporters and constituents, for their support, encouragement and assistance during the period of my illness. As well, I wish to reiterate my appreciation and complete confidence in the many health professionals who have made my recovery possible. While we may have financial challenges with our health system, I am convinced that we Nova Scotians are served by the best health professionals to be found anywhere in the world.
"I look forward to continuing as a member of the government as it meets its commitments to Nova Scotians, and to being part of a team that is building a brighter future for this province," he said.
Mr. Chataway was appointed to cabinet on Aug. 16, 1999 and held the portfolio of Environment and Labour as well as Human Resources at the time of his resignation.
Angus MacIsaac will continue as acting Minister for Environment and Labour.
Ron Russell will continue as acting Minister for Human Resources.
