International Human Rights Day Commemorated in Halifax

HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION--International Human Rights Day Commemorated in Halifax


The Human Rights Commission will present two human rights awards as part of the ceremonies to mark International Human Rights Day.

The commission and its partners invite members of the public to join them Sunday, Dec. 10 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the cafeteria of the Nova Scotia Community College, 1825 Bell Road, Halifax for the ceremonies.

International Human Rights Day, held every Dec. 10, is a time for reflection and action. This year's theme addresses the International Decade for the Eradication of Poverty, 1997 to 2006.

The program for Dec. 10 includes:

  • a keynote address by Paul O'Hara, counsellor and advocate at the North End Community Health Centre;

  • presentation of Human Rights Awards to Crossley Carpet Mills Ltd. of Truro and to the Shining Lights Choir, Halifax;

  • musical presentations from the Baha'i Fire and Light Chorale and the Kalina Singers of Eastern Europe;

  • musical presentation from Jeremiah Sparks.

Human Rights Day 2000 is hosted by the Human Rights Commission in conjunction with the Atlantic Jewish Council, the Baha'i Community, the Canadian Human Rights Commission, Halifax Regional Police, Human Resources Development Canada, Community YMCA, the RCMP, the Federation of Labour, the Nova Scotia Community College, and the Halifax-Dartmouth District Labour Council.
