Minister's Advisory Committee to Review Adoption Issue
COMMUNITY SERVICES--Minister's Advisory Committee to Review Adoption Issue
A minister's advisory committee will look at the adoption information issue. Community Services Minister Peter Christie said today that the committee will review Bill 17, which amends the Adoption Information Act.
"This is a very emotional and personal issue," said Mr. Christie. "It is extremely difficult to find the appropriate balance in law that will meet the personal needs of all those people affected by the release of adoption information."
The minister's advisory committee will review the specific changes recommended in the bill. Its members may examine legislation currently in place in other jurisdictions. The minister has asked the committee to submit a report to him as soon as possible so that he can bring legislation back to the House of Assembly.
When the bill was introduced in the House in fall 1999, there were strong opinions on both sides. Initially, it was referred to the Law Reform Commission for review, but it was never completed.
"We remain committed to the value of having an independent group review this legislation. The members of the advisory committee are well-suited for the task," Mr. Christie said. "I look forward to reviewing the committee's recommendations for consideration in determining our future direction."
