N.S. MUSEUM--Special Holiday Family Event comes to Maritime Museum

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax is hosting a fun- filled holiday event throughout December, celebrating the workings of Halifax Harbour. The launch of Theodore Tugboat's Big Harbour Holiday will take place on Friday, Dec. 1, at 11 a.m. at the museum on Lower Water Street, Halifax.

The family event will feature an exhibit of the real models and set pieces used in the award-winning children's television show Theodore Tugboat, produced by Cochran Entertainment of Halifax.

Special guest Denny Doherty, who plays the Harbour Master on the television series, will help to kick things off this weekend. On Friday, children and adults can take part in Story time with the Harbour Master, Denny Doherty, at either 6:30 p.m. or 8 p.m. Tickets are $2 each and available in the Maritime Museum Shop or by calling 902-424-3222.

On Sat., Dec. 2, the public have another chance to meet Mr. Doherty at an event called Meet the Harbour Master. It takes place between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

The models of Theodore Tugboat, Emily, Hank, Foduck, George and over 30 of their floating friends from The Big Harbour will be at the museum. A new friend will also be introduced as a children's program at the museum -- the new Big Harbour Play Centre. The play centre will be full of games and activities that will entertain children and educate them about our harbour. It will be available for booking by pre-schools, day-cares, Primary and Grade 1 classes, and Beavers and Sparks groups.

On the first three weekends of the month there will be plenty of activities for all including Model Tug and other craft workshops, Pillows & Pals Story time & Music, Drawing One Thousand Theodores, Sunday Theodore video matinées, face painting and a Theodore inflatable to visit. This Saturday and Sunday, there will also be radio-controlled model boat demonstrations. The unveiling of a Big Harbour mural created by local school children will take place on Dec. 9 and a Christmas tree lighting will be held on Dec. 17.

Admission to Theodore Tugboat's Big Harbour Holiday events is free for children under the age of six, $1 for children between the ages of six and 17, $2.50 for seniors, $3 for adults and $7.50 for a family. A separate fee applies to some activities.
