Deputy Minister Appointed

Premier John Hamm today announced the appointment of Douglas J. Keefe as deputy minister of the Department of Justice. Mr. Keefe has been acting in the position since August.

"Doug is a proven leader," said Premier Hamm. "We are fortunate to have someone of his intelligence and integrity serving in this vital position. I know he will continue to serve the department-- and Nova Scotians--well."

Mr. Keefe is a graduate of Saint Mary's University and Dalhousie Law School. He has held a senior position with the department since 1989, most recently as executive director of the Legal Services Division. He has served as principal legal advisor on energy matters, led the response to the Donald Marshall, Jr. Royal Commission and was central to the reorganization of Nova Scotia's court structure--including the abolition of the county court and the creation of the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal.

Mr. Keefe has developed and provided training in ethics and public service values, with a particular focus on promoting confidence in the public sector. He is a practising and active member of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society and serves as a member of Bar Council.

He is married to Julie Palmer and they have three children.
