CEO Announced for District Health Authority #4

Peter MacKinnon, the current site manager of the Colchester Regional Hospital in Truro, is the successful candidate for CEO of the Colchester-East Hants district health authority.

Mr. MacKinnon is also responsible for the administration of the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital in Tatamagouche and is vice- president of Primary Health for the Northern Regional Health Board and is responsible for public health, addiction and mental health services. He was previously the administrator of Victoria County Memorial Hospital in Baddeck.

"Mr. MacKinnon will do a fine job leading his team as we work together to ensure Nova Scotians get the care they need, where they need it, at a sustainable cost to taxpayers," said Health Minister Jamie Muir. "His leadership will help guide the district health authority through this transition."

Garry Pye, the newly appointed chair for the district, was involved in the selection of Mr. MacKinnon as CEO. In addition, representatives of medical staff, community health boards and the Department of Health were involved in the process.

The new district health authority is responsible for Colchester County and East Hants. It is smaller than the former Northern Regional Health Board. District health authorities are legislated to be accountable -- both to their communities and to the Department of Health -- for the decisions they make and the money they spend.

District health authorities will be responsible for maximizing resources and integrating parts of the health delivery system, including disease prevention and health promotion, diagnostic treatment, adult acute care, continuing care, public health, mental health and addiction services.

Mr. MacKinnon will assume his responsibility as CEO for the district on Jan. 1, 2001.
