Clearing Work to Begin on Highway 101

TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Clearing Work to Begin on Highway 101

Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works, announced today that clearing work will begin this winter to prepare for twinning Highway 101.

A tender has been called for the clearing of 20 kilometres of land next to the highway beginning at the Mount Uniacke interchange.

"I'm pleased that work will begin this winter," said Mr. Russell.

In accordance with department policy, the work will be conducted during the winter to reduce impacts on nesting birds and soil stability.

The minister said the province will continue to lobby Ottawa for a fair and appropriate share of highway funding.

Meanwhile, the department plans to spend nearly $400,000 this year to improve safety on Highway 101. Specifically, the department is beginning work to repair road shoulders, eliminate some downhill passing lanes and improve road markings and signage. More work will be done next year, as well.
