Help Arrives in Cape Breton
Emergency crews are helping families today in Howie Centre, Cape Breton, after heavy rains washed out a road culvert and stranded about 150 to 200 families in the Floral Heights Subdivision.
Crews from the Emergency Measures Organization, Transportation and Public Works, and the armed forces are busy building a footbridge to the isolated area. It is expected to be operational by 8 p.m. tonight, Nov. 2.
A Bailey bridge is being transported from Truro to Cape Breton. It is expected to be operational by Sunday or Monday.
The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board is accommodating children from the area at the Mountainview School.
A reception area has been established at the Howie Centre Fire Hall for residents as they wait for the footbridge to be installed. Residents inside the affected area requiring information should call 902-563-5012.
The homes have electricity and access to heating oil. Arrangements have been made to provide medical support, if necessary.
