Nova Scotians Attend National 4-H Conference
AGRICULTURE/FISHERIES--Nova Scotians Attend National 4-H Conferences
Nova Scotian 4-H members and leaders are attending two of the premiere events hosted by the Canadian 4-H Council.
The National 4-H Members' Conference and National 4-H Volunteer Leaders' Conference are being held Nov. 1-5 in Toronto. These conferences are held during National 4-H Week, Oct. 30-Nov. 5, celebrating the accomplishments of the 4-H program and the part it has played in developing talented, confident Canadian citizens. The 11 provincial representatives are winners of travel awards.
"The members and leaders who have been chosen to attend these conferences are role models for the provincial 4-H program and we can be proud of them and what they have contributed to Nova Scotia 4-H," said Ernest Fage, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries. "The total conference experience of gathering new knowledge and meeting people from other 4-H programs in Canada, the Untied States and the United Kingdom can only serve to develop them personally and strengthen their local 4-H clubs."
Sixty delegates from across Canada, six from the United States and three young farmers from the United Kingdom will attend the national members' conference, Agriculture...Vision 2000. During the conference, delegates participate in educational sessions focusing mainly on agricultural issues where they can voice their opinions and share ideas.
A special opportunity is available to Canadian participants at this year's conference. Those who are enrolled in a post- secondary institution and studying an agricultural-related discipline can apply for a $5,000 scholarship. The TD Bank Financial Group, in association with the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and the Canadian 4-H Council, are offering two scholarships, which will be presented Nov. 4 at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.
The Nova Scotia 4-H members attending the national 4-H members' conference are: Shannon MacLaughlin, Annapolis County; Robin Gates, Kings County; Justin Rovers, Antigonish County; Andrew Lewis, Cape Breton County; Anne Veniot, Lunenburg County; and Sara May Turber, Halifax East Hants.
The theme of the national 4-H volunteer leaders' conference is Quest For Quality. During this conference, 50 volunteer leaders from across Canada and five from the United States will improve their leadership skills and knowledge. They will exchange ideas through sessions that focus on adding quality to their local 4-H programs. Volunteer leaders will participate in a number of joint sessions with the 4-H member delegates.
The Nova Scotia delegates to the national 4-H leaders' conference are: Joze Kowenburg, Cumberland County; Jean Ascott, Annapolis County; Nelson Peterson, Victoria County; Mildred Levy, Kings County; and Mary Ellen MacDonald, Antigonish County.
