Melmerby Lifeguard Wins Award

Katie Campbell, lifeguard at Melmerby Beach in Pictou County, was named Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service employee of the year by the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service management committee.

Ms. Campbell of Chance Harbour, Pictou Co., was promoted to beach captain at Melmerby Beach in only her second summer with the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service.

"Katie has shown great composure and maturity, and has been a great leader at Melmerby throughout the summer," said Paul D'Eon, director of the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service. "Although the other nominees for this award are deserving of recognition for a job well done, Katie continuously exceeded expectations in the role of beach captain."

Other nominees for this award included Jazmine Hayden of Berwick,

  • beach captain at Aylesford Lake, Kings Co.; Nick Gee of Port Hawkesbury - beach captain at Rainbow Haven in Halifax County; and Jordan Hiscott of Glace Bay - lifeguard at Dominion Beach in Cape Breton County.

The management committee selects the lifeguard of the year from nominations submitted by each of the province's four area supervisors.

The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service is a joint project of the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission and the Lifesaving Society, Nova Scotia Branch.
