Antigonish Lifeguard Australia-bound

Antigonish lifeguard Adam Teasdale has been selected to participate in the 2000-01 Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service Australian lifeguard exchange program.

Initiated in 1986, the Australian exchange program is a reciprocal work exchange that provides Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service staff with the opportunity to lifeguard in Australia during the Australian summer holidays, from December to February. As part of the arrangement, an Australian lifeguard travels to Canada during July and August to work on Nova Scotia beaches.

Mr. Teasdale worked at Port Hood and Inverness beaches in Inverness County this year. Currently, he is enrolled in the human kinetics program at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, and also runs cross-country, track and field, and triathlons. Mr. Teasdale also swam competitively with the Antigonish Aquanauts for 10 years.

Last summer, Mr. Teasdale was voted Triathlon Nova Scotia's rookie of the year and top under-20 male. Mr. Teasdale's current goals are to make the International Triathlon Union circuit, and to be a member of the Canadian National Lifesaving team.

Candidates applying for the Australian exchange program are selected on their ability to be a good ambassador, to meet the skills required for guarding surf beaches, and to meet fitness and rescue-board skill requirements.

The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service is a joint project of the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission and the Lifesaving Society, Nova Scotia Branch.
