Division Wins International Marketing Award

The investment and trade division of Nova Scotia Economic Development has been recognized at an international marketing competition.

A department publication, titled Nova Scotia Open to the World, earned a Special Judges Award from the American Economic Development Council in the newsletter, newspaper and magazines category. The award, which is based on a publication's ability to attract and retain community business and industry, was presented recently at the council's 75th annual conference and educational exhibition in Dallas, Tex.

The award marks the fifth time the division has received a council award in the previous two years. The division brought home four awards in 1999, including top honours for its Nova Scotia manufacturers' directory. The department won more American Economic Development Council awards last year than any other economic development organization in Canada. Economic Development Minister Gordon Balser said the awards demonstrate staff's hard work and dedication.

"Winning five awards is more than just an outstanding accomplishment, it's a reflection of our staff's creativity, talent and commitment while promoting Nova Scotia to the rest of the world," said Mr. Balser.

Winners of the council awards were judged on specific criteria, including graphic appeal, appropriateness of messages, positioning and content. The highest awards are Best of Show and Special Judges while other categories include Best of Class, Superior, Excellent and Honourable Mention.

Nova Scotia Economic Development investment and trade staff recognized the help of supporting partners in winning the award. The Nova Scotia Marketing Agency, Department of Finance and Atlantic Progress magazine helped create the sales literature and promotional materials.

Entries submitted to the competition showcase the diverse marketing strategies economic development organizations utilize. Some of the items entered for judging include multimedia, television and radio advertising or printed materials like brochures, newsletters and magazines.

The council is an international organization founded in 1926 with more than 2,500 members. The group, headquartered in Illinois is the largest and oldest economic development society in the United States.
