School Supplies for Families on Assistance
This year, Nova Scotia families on income assistance will receive some extra money to help buy school supplies.
Families will receive $50 for each child five to 12 years old and $100 for each child 13 years and over who are registered and attending public schools.
The money will be added to assistance cheques. Families will not be required to apply for the funding.
Community Services Minister, Peter Christie, said the extra help with school supplies will relieve some of the added financial pressure each new school year brings.
"Back-to-school is an exciting time, but for many families, finding extra money for school supplies can be quite stressful. This funding will help students get the supplies they need to take on the challenges ahead," said Mr. Christie.
About 13,000 students between the ages of five to 12 will receive the funding, along with about 6,000 students over age 13. Students can use the extra funding to buy school supplies and pay various school fees such as locker charges.
Nova Scotia joins other Canadian provinces in offering this form of assistance.
