New Two-Lane Valley Bridge
The Valley Bridge in Colchester County will be replaced by a two- lane concrete structure. Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works, made the announcement today.
The minister said his department had considered replacing the bridge with a one-lane bridge and was ready to go this year. However, safety concerns expressed by the local community made the department re-evaluate its decision.
"We were considering the single-lane bridge because of cost and expediency," said Mr. Russell. "But local people insisted there is enough traffic, particularly heavy trucks, to warrant a two- lane bridge."
"We listened to the concerns of local residents and have acted on their suggestion," he said.
Design of the bridge and a new environmental assessment will begin immediately. Construction of the new bridge will take place next year.
