Western Wins Round 2 of Surf League
The Western Province club won the second round of the Nova Scotia Surf League on Monday, July 31, at Inverness Beach in Cape Breton. Western also won the first round of the four-round series.
Contributing to Western's success was Antigonish's Daniel Berkvens, who won in men's beach flags. Captain Nancy Witty of Wolfville partnered with Sean Dyer of Dartmouth to win the rescue board rescue event in a time of four minutes and 31 seconds.
Other key performers for Western were Stacey Connick of Truro and Chris Stone of Bridgewater. Ms. Connick placed second to Shauna Conrad of Dartmouth in the women's surf race (swim), and went on to partner Mr. Stone in a fourth-place finish in the rescue board rescue, earning key points for their club. Ms. Conrad, who competes for North Shore club, won the women's rescue board race, and partnered Gary Basso of Dominion to place second in the rescue board rescue.
Having won the first two rounds, Western Province now leads in the Nova Scotia Surf League's overall standings with 16 points. North Shore, Cape Breton and Eastern Shore clubs are tied for second, with 12 points each.
