Fifty-five Health Researchers Receive Funding

The Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation will fund 55 Nova Scotia health researchers during the next two years.

The researchers will examine various components of Nova Scotia's health care system, including the effectiveness of screening for breast cancer, women's experiences with cardiac disease and identifying children at high risk for mental disorders.

"These research projects encompass many different areas of health and will prove to be a great investment for Nova Scotians and Nova Scotia's health care system overall," said Health Minister Jamie Muir. "Today's announcement demonstrates our commitment to invest in local researchers to help find new and better ways to keep people well and to treat them better when they do need care."

The research funded by the foundation will also encourage and support collaborative efforts with research counterparts across Canada and help attract specialists to the province.

Grant recipient Leslie Anne Campbell received $50,000 to research the area of children at high risk for mental disorders.

"I am delighted to have been awarded an Establishment Grant by the Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation," said Ms. Campbell. "This study is a foundation for a direction of research which will hopefully lead to important changes in clinical practice and public policy in Nova Scotia."

The health minister also announced today that Krista Connell will become executive director of the Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation beginning Aug. 15. It is a two-year term. Ms. Connell was previously employed as program manager of health care benefits at the Workers Compensation Board.

The Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation was established in January of 2000. It will invest $4.3 million directly into health research to assist, collaborate with and fund individuals and organizations conducting health research in the province.
