Centre for Craft and Design Temporarily Closes

The Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design in Halifax will be temporarily closed this fall due to renovations at the Johnston Building. Current exhibits will continue until Sept. 2. The centre will reopen in January of 2001.

"While the centre is closed, staff will be reviewing programs and preparing for the reopening in the new year," said Chris Tyler, manager of craft, design, and publishing programs for the Department of Tourism and Culture. "The reopening will coincide with the centre's 10th anniversary, and we encourage everyone to watch for new developments."

Fall courses offered in the centre's teaching studios will be cancelled. However, beginner and intermediate pottery classes will be held in the Pottery Studio located at 1531 Grafton St. For further details and to register for pottery classes, call 902-424-4062. Classes will resume in all the studios in the new year with a winter/spring term.

The Mary E. Black Gallery will also be affected by this closure. The two shows scheduled for fall of 2000 -- Talking Threads, curated by Laureen van Lierop, and Intricacies and Endearments: Objects Designed from the Heart, curated by Pamela Pike -- have been included in the 2001 gallery schedule.

The administrative offices will be moved temporarily to the department's cultural affairs section, World Trade and Convention Centre, 4th floor. Centre staff can be reached at the usual mailing address of PO Box 456, Halifax, NS, B3J 2R5, and telephone number, 902-424-4062.

The Centre for Craft and Design is located at 1683 Barrington St.
