SPORT/RECREATION COMMISSION Lifeguards to Compete in New York

Five women from the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service have been selected to compete on Wednesday, July 26, at a lifeguard tournament in New York state.

The 16th annual All-Woman Lifeguard Tournament takes place at Jacob Riis Park in Queens County, N.Y.

Three of the Nova Scotia competitors -- Lori Borgal, Hannah Fraser and Amy Clattenburg -- are from Halifax while Nancy Witty is from Wolfville and Jazmine Hayden is from Berwick. Only Ms. Clattenburg has not participated in this event before.

In 1999, Team Nova Scotia placed second overall in its division at the New York state tournament. Ms. Borgal took a first place finish in the ironwoman, a second place in beach flags, and combined with Ms. Fraser to win the run-swim relay. In the run-swim-run, Ms. Fraser and Ms. Borgal finished second and third respectively. Ms. Witty placed third in the ironwoman and won the run-paddle-run.

Mss. Borgal, Fraser, Witty and Hayden are coming off a stellar performance in a recent tournament at Rissers Beach, Lunenburg Co. The four women combined to take top spot in seven of eight events, including beach flags, the run-swim-run, paddle board race and the grueling ironwoman.

Ms. Clattenburg is a 1998-99 Atlantic Universities Athletics Association all-star for the Dalhousie Tigers varsity swim team; Jazmine Hayden is the 2000 Nova Scotia All-Women beach flags winner. Ms. Witty is a seasoned lifesaving competitor with national and international competition experience. Ms. Borgal and Ms. Fraser also swam with the Dalhousie Tigers and were 1999-2000 Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union qualifiers as well as AUAA all-stars.

The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service is a joint project of the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission and the Lifesaving Society, Nova Scotia Branch.
