Top Female Lifeguards To Compete

The province's top female lifeguards will compete in the third annual Nova Scotia All-Women Lifeguard Competition on Tuesday, July 18, at Rissers Beach Provincial Park, Lunenburg Co.

Female lifeguards compete in either team or individual divisions, vying for the top spot in up to eight different events, including the run-swim-run, iron-woman and beach flags. Registration is at noon and the day's events begin at 1 p.m. The competition is intended to promote and encourage the participation of women in the sport of lifesaving.

Last year's competition was largely dominated by the team of Lori Borgal and Hannah Fraser of Halifax. The two clinched the overall team title by winning six of the eight events. Nancy Witty, of Wolfville, won the overall individual title.

Awards are presented to the top three finishers in each event and overall trophies are awarded to the team and individual acquiring the most points throughout the competition. Award presentations take place on the beach following the last event of the day.

The competition is organized by the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service, a joint project of the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission and the Nova Scotia branch of the Lifesaving Society.
