Dinosaur Expedition 2000 to Begin July 15
Dinosaur Expedition 2000 will run from Saturday, July 15 to Monday, July 31, in Parrsboro.
The goal of this dinosaur dig, one of only two being conducted in Canada this year, is to collect the bones of a 200-million-year- old prosauropod dinosaur known to be at the research site. This is the third dinosaur skeleton to be collected from the site, a small bone bed researchers at the Fundy Geological Museum have been studying for years.
Researchers hope to recover the entire skeleton which is currently in danger due to the fast erosion at the site. The tremendously high tides in the Parrsboro area, rising and falling almost 10 metres with each tide, cause the cliff at the research site to erode at an estimated one-metre per year.
The expedition will be led by Tim Fedak, lab manager at the Fundy Geological Museum. He will be accompanied by several other museum staff, as well as several volunteers from around the province.
Daily updates of the expedition's progress can be found on the Fundy Geological Museum's website at www.fundygeomuseum.com
Dinosaur Expedition 2000 has been generously supported by a Nova Scotia Museum paleontology research grant and a Jurassic Foundation research grant.
