Queens County Bridge Closed
The Charleston Bridge over the Medway River, Queens Co., is closed indefinitely after collapsing into the river on Tuesday, July 11.
Portals of the bridge were struck by a loaded pulp truck, weakening the structure and causing the centre span to collapse. The accident occurred shortly after 7 p.m.
The truck is sitting on the bridge deck in the water. Engineers from the Department of Transportation and Public Works are on the scene overseeing the removal of the truck. The driver was taken to hospital with undetermined injuries.
Aubrey Martell, area manager for the department, said a detour around the site has been marked. Options for the replacement of the bridge will be evaluated once the site has been cleared of debris.
