New Townhouse Development
Waterfront Development Corp. Ltd. and Halifax Regional Municipality announced today the sale of property in downtown Dartmouth.
Cheltonham Developments Ltd. is going to build a new 25-unit townhouse development. Construction on Phase 1 is expected to begin this summer and Phase 2 will follow.
In 1999, HRM and Waterfront Development Corp. Ltd. publicized a request for proposals for lands bounded by King Street, Alderney Drive and Wentworth Street. Cheltonham Developments Ltd. of Dartmouth was the successful proponent. The development will consist of 25 townhouses and open space.
"We are very pleased to be part of this new residential development for downtown Dartmouth. Cheltonham Developments will be constructing a quality townhouse development, which will be instrumental in the continued rejuvenation of downtown Dartmouth," said Annette Marshall, chair of the Waterfront Development Corp. Ltd.
"This development follows considerable investment by the corporation in Dartmouth over the last number of years, such as Ferry Terminal Park, and other housing developments, such as Admiralty Place," she added. "The corporation would see additional adjacent land under its ownership being placed on the market in the near future."
"This is exactly the type of residential development we want to see in downtown Dartmouth," said Mayor Walter Fitzgerald of Halifax Regional Municipality. "It will provide a much needed positive boost for the future of the downtown community, and it fits in well with the proposed Downtown Dartmouth Plan for more housing."
John Cunningham, deputy mayor and councillor for the area, said:
"I greet the announcement of the project enthusiastically,
especially with the knowledge that the business and residential
community of the downtown have embraced the project
wholeheartedly."
"Construction should begin immediately on Phase 1, which consists of six townhouses on King Street," said Brett Sheffer of Cheltonham Developments. "We hope the second phase along Alderney Drive and Wentworth Street will begin shortly after this. Interest has been high from prospective buyers for this area. We are pleased to be part of a new residential development in downtown Dartmouth."
