N.S. Seeks Bids for Coal Gas Exploration

Nova Scotia has issued a request for proposals for coal gas exploration in the Stellarton/New Glasgow area. The proposal is designed to expand the area currently under exploration to enhance possible commercialization of the coal-bed methane resource in the area.

The additional lands include part of the former Westray coal leases, but an exclusion zone for the immediate mine site remains. The establishment of the exclusion zone and the plans to expand exploration have been discussed with family members of the Westray miners who died in the explosion eight years ago.

Current work in the area reveals a potential resource of 1.4 trillion cubic feet of gas.

"The economic benefits that would flow from a commercial coal-bed methane project in this area are considerable," said Petroleum Directorate Minister Gordon Balser. "We believe this call for proposals represents a balance between these economic benefits, and respect for the Westray family members."

The request for proposals requires any proponent to consult further with members of the Westray families regarding drilling and development plans.

The request for proposals is open until Aug. 21, at 4 p.m. Copies may be obtained; contact Rick Ratcliffe, registrar of mineral and petroleum titles, 1701 Hollis St., 3rd Floor, P.O. Box 698, Halifax, B3J 2T9, or phone 902-424-8155 or fax 902-424-7735.
