4-H Members Prepare for Atlantic Showcase

Seventy 4-H members from around Atlantic Canada are heading to the Annual Eastern Breeders 4-H Showcase June 25 - 27 in Truro. The 70 will learn animal management and preparation practices from leaders in the agricultural industry.

Eastern Breeders Inc. has sponsored the training event for the past 11 years. Along with financial assistance, it provides highly qualified staff to ensure 4-H members learn the most current techniques in clipping, showing and herd management.

"We can be proud that our 4-H members take the initiative to learn good management practices that they in turn can apply on their family farms," said Ernest Fage, Minister of Agriculture and Marketing. "That's one of the reasons the young farmers in Nova Scotia continue to be leaders in the agriculture industry."

Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Marketing staff provide organizational assistance on behalf of the Atlantic 4-H committee to help make the showcase possible.

"The Nova Scotia 4-H program is pleased to be in partnership with Eastern Breeders Inc. and to be able to provide 4-H members with the latest training opportunities," said Elizabeth Crouse, manager of 4-H and rural organizations. "The intensive training that the youth receive prepare them to be better 4-H members and contenders in the show ring."

During the workshop, experienced show people teach the finer points of show preparation. Then 4-H members work on their own animals to prepare their cattle to participate in the beef and dairy show at 10 a.m. on June 27 in the MacMillan Show Centre at the Exhibition Grounds in Truro. Awards will be presented to the winners in each class at the event.

The public is welcome to attend the cattle show to see first-hand the skills of these young leaders in agriculture.
