ENVIRONMENT-Minister Asks Sempra to Supply More Information
Acting Environment Minister Michael Baker is asking Sempra Atlantic Gas to supply more information about the company's proposal to lay gas pipeline in Nova Scotia.
"Sempra has applied for environmental assessment approval but one issue still remains to be worked out," said Mr. Baker.
Mr. Baker said the issue relates to Sempra and the Department of Transportation and Public Works reaching an agreement on where the pipeline will be placed.
In its application, Sempra asked to place the majority of the pipeline in the shoulder of the road. However, the Department of Transportation and Public Works wants more information. Specifically, officials have questions about the long-term maintenance and integrity of the roadbed if the pipeline were to go in the shoulder.
Mr. Baker said Sempra has received a letter asking for more information. Once the company responds, the minister will have up to 25 days to make a decision based on the new information.
Sempra registered the natural gas distribution system for Nova Scotia for Environmental Assessment on May 19, 2000. Comments from government reviewers and the general public were due on June 2, 2000, and the minister's decision was due today.
