TOURISM/CULTURE-Website Highlights Communities Marking Millennium

This summer, Nova Scotians are celebrating the millennium by giving back to their communities in hundreds of unique and creative ways.

The Municipality of the District of Digby, is compiling a collection of stories called The Elder Transcripts, as a part of their millennium celebrations. In Freeport, Digby Co., the community is remembering their seafaring heritage by performing a play in a natural seacoast setting.

Other millennium events include an Aboriginal Youth Conference, a walking trail designed to teach students about their surrounding habitat, and an amateur visual arts show.

To find out more about these and other activities planned, people can visit the province's Sea and Spirit website at www.gov.ns.ca/novascotia2000.

The province is promoting Sea and Spirit as the theme for community events and activities designed to mark the millennium. The website provides groups and individuals across the province an opportunity to share planned millennium projects with their neighbours, the rest of Canada and the world beyond.

"The website is a showcase of the many events and activities that are happening throughout the summer and the rest of the year," said Rodney MacDonald, Minister of Tourism and Culture. "By sharing their millennium stories, Nova Scotians can learn about one another, create a collective history, and actively participate in their community."

The site is also a forum for Nova Scotians to share their thoughts about the province and its heritage. People are being encouraged to contribute stories, photos and pictures on-line. Communities are also invited to incorporate the Sea and Spirit theme into their events.
