Inverness County Bridge Closed
Long John's Bridge over the South West Mabou River, Inverness Co., is closed to traffic indefinitely after being damaged by a lumber truck.
Long John's Bridge, a single-lane, 103-year-old steel truss bridge on the Rear Interval Road, was closed early Tuesday, June 6, when it was struck by the vehicle. Transportation and Public Works officials believe the load hit several vertical steel beams on the bridge, severing a main support. The northwest corner of Long John's Bridge dropped about one metre.
Robert Carroll, area manager for Transportation and Public Works, said options for repair or replacement of the 25-metre span are being evaluated.
A detour of approximately eight kilometres has been established along the Moran Road and the Upper South West Mabou Road.
