Feedback Supports Strategy Development

Round-table discussions underway across Nova Scotia this spring are providing important feedback in the development of an economic growth strategy for the province.

Regional development agencies have organized the meetings to elicit ideas and gather input following release of a government discussion paper last month. The paper, titled Toward Prosperity, was developed to help focus discussion on ways to support economic growth and create opportunities for people and communities.

"The people we've heard from are challenging us to make better use of our resources and to add more value to our assets before export," said Economic Development Minister Gordon Balser. "They're advancing fresh ideas and suggesting new approaches -- the type of feedback that's critical if we're to arrive at the best economic strategy for Nova Scotians."

The round tables are bringing together leaders in business, labour, the community, and in the educational and political fields. The sessions began in mid-May and will continue to the end of June. At least one will be held in each of Nova Scotia's 18 counties.

Other round tables will bring together representatives of different sectors. Those wishing to attend a session in their area or sector should contact their local regional development agency or industry organization.

The discussion paper is available on the Internet at www.gov.ns.ca/ecor/strategy/ . The public can offer feedback through this website until June 30. A series of questions are posed to guide the online discussion, and respondents are also given an opportunity to comment on issues not raised.

"An involved and committed discourse, such as we have had to date, is absolutely necessary if we are to identify all the opportunities out there and make the best of them," said Mr. Balser. "The ideas being put forward will be of tremendous benefit when we craft the final strategy document."

A Nova Scotia Economic Development team is gathering the feedback for consideration and will work through the summer to develop an economic growth framework and an implementation plan. Its goal is to deliver a strategy to cabinet in September.
