Proposal to Secure Resort Management Contract
The province is seeking outside expertise to help identify and hire a private-sector management company to operate Nova Scotia's Signature Resorts.
The government has identified the resorts as an area where a private-sector management contract would be negotiated. A national or international chain could bring significant marketing power to the table, strengthening the resorts and increasing their positive economic impact to the province as a whole.
Rodney MacDonald, Minister of Tourism and Culture, issued the call for proposals today. It will involve consulting support to develop a management contract approach, identify potential partners in the private sector and assist in structuring a contract for the operation of the resorts. It is expected that a management contract would be in place for the 2001 operating year.
"Given the complexities involved, we are seeking outside expertise from those who are experienced in the hospitality business and in structuring such arrangements," said Mr. MacDonald. "We want the best deal for Nova Scotia, recognizing that resorts are a key part of Nova Scotia's tourism infrastructure, generating significant economic impact in the areas where they are located."
The province of Nova Scotia has been operating three resorts - The Pines Resort, Digby, Liscombe Lodge, Liscomb Mills, and Keltic Lodge, Ingonish Beach - for more than 30 years. The province owns The Pines Resort and Liscombe Lodge, while Keltic Lodge is owned by the federal government and leased to the province under a memorandum agreement.
The resorts employ approximately 400 staff on a full-time and seasonal basis and are considered to be premier destinations for visitors to our province. They have long enjoyed an image in the marketplace as high-quality properties and this image has helped the resorts capture a share of the high-end market and command premier prices.
The request for proposals will be open for bidding until Thursday, June 15. Details can be found at on the website at www.gov.ns.ca/finance/tour .
