Centre for Craft and Design Welcomes Summer

The Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design is celebrating the arrival of summer by extending its hours of operation. You can now enjoy exhibits and displays at the centre during evening hours.

Located at 1683 Barrington St., the centre is home to the Mary E. Black Gallery and a Production Craft Showroom that will now be open for viewing Monday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Tuesday to Friday 9 a.m. -9 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

The current exhibit in the Mary E. Black Gallery, Mat Hooking

  • Simple to Sublime, continues until June 3. This is a juried show by the Rug Hooking Guild of Nova Scotia co-ordinated by Shirley Bradshaw of Yarmouth. Submitted by guild members from across the province, the exhibition has over 90 works of three types: contemporary mats/wall hangings; historical/heritage rugs and smaller craft items.

"This exhibition conveys a message to its viewers about rug hooking where it began, how it has progressed and what the future holds," said Ms. Bradshaw.

The next display in the Production Craft Showroom is also a celebration of summer. How Does Your Garden Grow?, opens May 24 and runs until June 26. This display features works by Nova Scotian craftspeople with your green thumb in mind.

In addition to enjoyable long summer evenings and gardening, another sure sign of summer is construction projects. Despite being surrounded in scaffolding, the centre encourages the public to come in and enjoy the fine Nova Scotia crafts currently on exhibit during extended summer hours.

Admission is by donation. For further information call 902- 424-4062.
