Surplus Crown Assets Put to Good Use

Transportation and Public Works (to Oct. 2007)

Dozens of schools, transition homes, and volunteer groups benefitted from donations of surplus provincial goods this past year, goods that ranged from beds and dishes to chairs and computers.

The province donated about 2,000 surplus computers to schools around Nova Scotia through the Computers for Schools program.

"This is a wonderful way to help people across Nova Scotia," said Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "By donating these surplus assets, the province is able to help groups and associations that make a positive impact on their communities. These groups are often the ones that can least afford things so many of us take for granted."

The province also sold, auctioned or tendered surplus assets, from lawnmowers and surplus land to forklifts and weed eaters. Those sales generated net proceeds of $470,961 last year. Many other surplus items were recycled.

The Surplus Crown Property Disposal Report was tabled today in the legislature. It covers all transactions between April 1, 1999, to March 31, 2000. The report is available at the Nova Scotia Government Bookstore, 1700 Granville St., Halifax. Telephone 902-424-7580 or 1-800-526-6575.
