Commission to be Reviewed

The province's Human Rights Commission will soon launch a review of its operations, a project designed to improve services to the public.

This spring, the commission will seek a partner to develop a discussion paper on future directions for the commission. Information in the discussion paper and subsequent feedback will be used as part of a broader review, which is expected to be completed by March 31, 2001.

Mayann Francis, the commission's executive director, has called for the review to examine the organizational structure of the commission, roles and responsibilities for staff and how service is provided. Michael Baker, Minister responsible for the administration of the Human Rights Act, has endorsed the review.

"The review will be comprehensive and will examine all aspects of the commission's work, with a view to providing better and more efficient service to the public," Ms. Francis said. "The commission must be accountable for the services it provides. The status quo is not acceptable."

The process of finding a suitable partner to develop the discussion paper will begin shortly.
