Round Tables to Focus on Economic Strategy
The Nova Scotia government is moving in a new direction to promote economic growth in the province.
Economic Development Minister Gordon Balser today released a discussion paper to guide development and focus discussion on ways to enhance the business climate in Nova Scotia and create opportunities for people and communities.
"Government's role is one of ensuring the right environment for business to thrive," said Mr. Balser. "We want to see people succeed no matter where they live in this province. For this to happen, we need to recognize the opportunities out there and capitalize on our strengths. This discussion paper outlines the elements we believe are important in doing this."
The paper, titled Toward Prosperity, will be the basis of round- table discussions to be held across Nova Scotia in May and June. Regional development agencies are organizing many of these meetings, which will involve business, labour, community, educational and political leaders. Other round tables will bring together representatives of specific sectors.
The discussion paper is available on the Internet at www.gov.ns.ca/ecor/strategy/ , and the public can offer feedback through this website.
Comments and suggestions from the round tables and website will help the minister and departmental staff complete an economic- growth strategy for delivery to cabinet in September.
"We know Nova Scotia has great potential," said Mr. Balser. "An effective economic framework will allow us to take the best of what we have, to move on that potential, and make it real."
