Demolitions Start Friday
The demolition of eight houses on Sydney's Frederick Street should begin on Friday. The properties near the old coke ovens are owned by the province.
Each of the demolitions should take about three hours. Once the houses are demolished and the debris removed, the foundations will be filled with gravel. They will be seeded later.
All of the houses have been checked to make sure there will be no health or safety risk for people in the neighbourhood. Over the next few days, crews hired by the Department of Transportation and Public Works will remove things such as floor tiles containing asbestos, mercury in thermostats, or heating oil in oil tanks.
The department's representatives, George Hennick and Richard White, will be at the site to respond to the public's questions about the demolition work. They can be reached in Sydney at 902- 567-1133.
