Strict Deadlines Ordered for Composter

Good Earth Resources Group in Sackville has been ordered to hire a professional consultant to review and provide solutions to deal with odours coming from its facility. The report is due in 45 days.

"These are specific measures meant to deal with specific problems. Once the report is reviewed, Good Earth will have to be very aggressive in following through on the recommendations," said acting Environment Minister Michael Baker.

The measures, part of a ministerial order signed by Mr. Baker, have been delivered to the company.

The order also contains instructions to improve the facility's record-keeping and composting processes.

"This is the beginning of the department being more proactive in dealing with complaints about composting facilities," he said. "This is a message that should be listened to by all composters from one end of this province to the other."

Mr. Baker added regulations putting tighter controls on composting facilities will be introduced shortly.

If the company doesn't comply, the minister has the option to shut the facility.
