Crews Repair Damaged Road in Arichat

A storm-damaged road in Arichat, Richmond Co., should be back in full service by today, said Robert Carroll, an area manager with the Department of Transportation and Public Works.

Crews are going to be working along the Lower Road this morning, which was hit hard in the recent storm. High tides and pounding surf battered the coastal road on Friday night, Jan. 21. Since then, crews have been working to clear snow and debris.

A six-metre long stretch of Lower Road suffered the most damage. Its shoulder was almost entirely swept away up to the edge of the pavement. Since then, a barricade has been in place on the seaside of the road, reducing traffic to a single lane.

Department crews are scheduled to bolster that spot and five smaller areas with rock fill. They're expected to complete their repair work by this afternoon.

Preliminary estimates suggest the cost to repair the road will be about $20,000.
