Tax Credit Review

The Nova Scotia government is asking for feedback as it undertakes a review of tax credits offered by the province.

There are 16 provincial tax credits and rebates benefitting individuals, businesses, community and charitable organizations, municipalities, schools, universities and hospitals. A tax credit exempts a certain amount of money used for a specific purpose from provincial tax. An example would be the sales tax rebate paid to builders of new homes. The provincial portion of HST paid on building supplies is returned to the builder of a new home to encourage new home construction in Nova Scotia.

"With everything government does on the table for analysis and review, it is important that we also look at our program of tax credits and rebates," Finance Minister Neil LeBlanc said today. "As part of this review, we want to hear from Nova Scotians as virtually every Nova Scotian has a stake in this process.

"Whether you buy a new home, a book, or operate a new small business, you are affected by tax credits and rebates and we want to hear from you."

The Department of Finance has created a website that explains the provinces various tax credits and rebates, and asks for feedback. By going to www.gov.ns.ca/finance/fedprov/credit, anyone can take part in the review process. There are 137 Community Access Sites across Nova Scotia where anyone may access the Internet. Internet access is also available at most public libraries in Nova Scotia and at Access Nova Scotia centres across the province.

To ensure that all comments can be considered during the review process, the public is asked to respond by Jan. 20.
