Warning About Meat Products from Tatamagouche Company

The provincial health department has issued a warning about products from the Tatamagouche Donair Sausage Company.

Provincial medical health officer, Dr. Jeff Scott, is advising people not to eat meat products produced by the company.

The products include:

  • beef jerky
  • donair sticks
  • pepperoni
  • donair meat
  • smoked pork chops
  • smoked donairs
  • sausage

Dr. Scott said the products have been deemed potentially harmful to human health and should be destroyed.

On Nov. 24, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency first issued a Health Hazard Alert. It warned the public not to consume donair sticks produced by the company, because of a risk that they contained the bacteria responsible for botulism in humans.

Later that day the federal minister of agriculture and agri-food issued a mandatory recall of the product. Further testing indicates that the risk could exist in other processed meat products produced by the company.

Provincial and federal health and food inspection organizations are working with the producer to ensure the safety of future products.

Botulism is a life-threatening illness caused by toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Food contaminated with C. botulinum bacteria may not look or smell spoiled.
