Demolitions to Begin Near Coke Ovens

The Department of Transportation and Public Works will begin demolition this week of the houses the province owns on Frederick Street and Curry's Lane in Sydney.

The province recently purchased the properties near the site of the old coke ovens.

During the work, fences will be erected around some of the properties. Materials such as mercury in the thermostats, floor tiles that contain asbestos and oil from residential oil storage tanks will be removed before demolition.

Debris from the houses will be taken away for disposal at an approved construction and demolition debris site.

The actual demolition of each house will take about three hours. Once the houses are demolished, the foundations will be knocked-in, filled with soil and seeded.

Demolition work will be ongoing as the government purchases other properties on Frederick Street and Curry's Lane.
