Mr. Fage Meets with Fishing Organizations

The native food fishery and treaty right fishery will be the top agenda item at a meeting of fisheries organizations and provincial fisheries staff in Truro this week.

Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Ernest Fage will host the meeting at the Agri-Tech Park in Truro on Thursday, Oct. 21, and Friday, Oct. 22. Mr. Fage said the goal of the meeting will be to continue finding common ground in resolving current disputes and help in securing long-term solutions.

"Since the Marshall decision was announced, I have been pushing the federal government to respond quickly. We must work out solutions as soon as possible for our coastal communities," Mr. Fage said.

He added he will continue to make sure the safety of native and non-native fishermen and conservation are key elements of any fishery management plan.

More than 60 fishing organizations, including native representatives, are expected to attend the conference which starts at 3 p.m. on Oct. 21. The meeting begins at 9 a.m. on Oct. 22 and is scheduled to end at noon.
