Foster Family Week Recognizes Vital Resource
Foster Family Week, Oct. 17-24, recognizes and honours the dedication and support Nova Scotia's foster families give to children, their families and their communities.
"Many Nova Scotians may not realize how important foster families are to this province," said Peter Christie, Minister of Community Services. "They provide the care and love that children need, and we need to support them as much as possible."
Mr. Christie launched Foster Family Week at a proclamation ceremony in Halifax today attended by staff and members of the Federation of Foster Families of Nova Scotia.
The Department of Community Services, in collaboration with the federation, has an initiative under way to improve training and support for foster parents. In addition, foster families will receive a four per cent increase in the daily expense rates provided to cover the cost of raising foster children.
Foster parents receive monthly financial support from the Department of Community Services to cover board, clothing and other expenses. If a child has special needs, the family is eligible for additional funding.
Last year, there were 958 children in foster care and 695 approved foster homes in the province. Special events such as banquets, recognition nights and receptions will be held across the province next week to thank foster families for their efforts.
"Foster families are most often working toward the goal of returning a child to his or her parents," said Mr. Christie. "It takes a lot of patience and understanding."
Before receiving a child, all new foster parents take a six- to eight-week orientation program and mandatory training. Additional opportunities for training may be provided to meet a particular child's special needs.
