Constructive Relations With New Minister: Hamm

Premier John Hamm today said he hopes the appointment of Bernie Boudreau to the Senate and as federal minister responsible for Nova Scotia will help build a more positive relationship between all levels of government.

"Nova Scotia has been hard hit in recent years by the federal government, receiving 16 per cent of federal cuts, despite our province having only three per cent of Canada's population," said Premier Hamm, in Maine today to co-chair the 24th annual Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers. "I congratulate Senator Boudreau on his appointment and look forward to working with him to ensure that Nova Scotia's agenda is properly addressed by Ottawa."

Premier Hamm said he would like to meet with the senator as soon as possible to highlight several of the province's priorities, including more federal support for health care and highway improvement. Moreover, the premier said he would like to discuss the consensus on Devco reached by the three provincial party leaders on Friday for an improved severance and compensation package, which will apply to more employees than the current plan. The premier will also reiterate his concern with additional defence cuts affecting Nova Scotia, such as those at Canadian Forces Base Greenwood.

"Senator Boudreau has proven to be an able communicator in the past," said Premier Hamm. "His talents will hopefully be of great assistance at the federal cabinet table."

The premier paid tribute to Senator Al Graham, Leader of the Government in the Senate and Minister responsible for Nova Scotia since June 1997.

"During my early days as premier, Senator Graham showed himself extremely willing to work with our new government to advance Nova Scotia's interests," said Premier Hamm. "I thank him for his efforts on behalf of all Nova Scotians and wish him well in his future endeavours."
