Prince Colliery Team Wins Mine Rescue Competition
The Prince colliery mine rescue team captained by John Walker won the 1999 Nova Scotia Mine Rescue Competition on Sept. 25 in Glace Bay.
The Prince team was declared the overall winner of the two-day competition over three other teams, two from Phalen captained by Pat J. MacNeil and Neil A. McKinnon. The Canadian Salt Company Ltd. team from Pugwash, captained by Bruce Beattie, returned to the 28th mine rescue competition after a five-year absence to capture the firefighting task event.
The Phalen team under Mr. MacNeil and the Canadian Salt Company team tied for second place in the competition.
The Prince team won the written, first aid and obstacle task events. Mr. MacNeil's team won the smoke task and also tied with the Prince mine for the bench and gas task events.
Prince colliery team members are: John Walker, captain, Sydney; Doug Rideout, trainer, Brian Halliday, sub-captain, Mansel Warren, and Jim Cantwell, all of Sydney Mines; Steve Farrell Jr., Sydney; Bill Harris, Glace Bay; and Cyril LeBlanc, Point Edward.
