Canadian Salt Company Team Wins Firefighting Event

The mine rescue team from the Canadian Salt Company Ltd. in Pugwash won the firefighting task event in the 1999 Nova Scotia Mine Rescue Competition on Sept. 25 in Glace Bay.

The team, captained by Bruce Beattie of Oxford, also tied for second place overall in the two-day competition with a team from the Cape Breton Development Corp.'s Phalen mine captained by Pat MacNeil.

The overall winning team of the 28th mine rescue competition was from the Cape Breton Development Corp. Prince colliery captained by John Walker. The fourth team to compete, led by captain Neil A. McKinnon, was also from the Phalen colliery.

It was the first time in five years that the Canadian Salt Company team participated in the Nova Scotia mine rescue competition. Team members are Mr. Beattie, Glen Boyd, Gordon Myers, and Wayne Reid, all of Pugwash; Arthur Briggs and Keith Tattrie, both of Wallace; Henry Chapman of Amherst; and Buck Wile, co-ordinator, Masstown.
