New Plant, Partnerships for Chester Company

Hawboldt Industries has officially opened its new manufacturing facility in Chester. The 3,700-square-metre (40,000-square-foot) plant will enable the company to expand product lines and form new partnerships.

The expansion began last November in response to increased activities and higher demand for Hawboldt products worldwide.

The company designs and manufactures deck machinery and underwater gear for clients in the defence, fishing, shipbuilding, oceanographic and oil and gas industries.

"We are tremendously pleased with the progress of our company and the work of our employees in getting the new plant up and running," said Lee Dewolfe, general manager of Hawboldt. "As a result of their efforts, new equipment and our new production capacity, we will soon solidify our reputation as a world-class manufacturer."

During the opening, Mr. Dewolfe announced Hawboldt's partnership with two internationally renown crane manufacturers, Hydralift AS of Norway and Pioneer Cranes of Kansas City, Mo.

"These partnerships will not only give us access to respected manufacturers whose products are used worldwide, but we will also be able to carry out part production of Hydralift cranes in our new facilities," said Mr. Dewolfe. "This is vital to our customers as delivery time, transportation and local manufacturing play a major role in their decision to hire suppliers."

The total cost of the project is $3.5 million. In April, Economic Development announced a $2.7-million loan for the expansion and equipment. Hawboldt provided the remainder of the funds.

"By expanding its operation and increasing exports, Hawboldt Industries is also improving the economy of Lunenburg County," said Economic Development Minister Gordon Balser. "New exports lead to greater growth for the company and, in turn, more jobs and improved skills for Nova Scotians."

The company employs 50 people. So far the expansion has created 10 jobs.

Hawboldt Industries received its ISO 9001:1994 certification in 1997. In addition to serving Canadian customers, it exports products to clients in the United States, Europe and the Far East.

The company was established in 1906 to supply marine equipment to the fishing industry.
