Veith House Awareness Week
The week of Sept. 20-24 has been officially declared as Veith House Awareness Week.
In unveiling the proclamation on Sept. 22 during a ceremony at the community centre in Halifax's north end, Premier John Hamm paid tribute to the work of the facility, which is marking the 25th anniversary of its incorporation. Maureen MacDonald, MLA for Halifax Needham, and Jerry Blumenthal, a Halifax Regional Municipality councillor, joined the premier at the event.
"Veith House is a fine example of the community-based, non-profit organizations that are on the frontlines of service delivery," said Premier Hamm, who toured the facility following the proclamation ceremony. "I am also impressed by the particular knowledge and understanding of people who work, both as volunteers and as employees, at Veith House."
The mission of Veith House is to work primarily with people living in poverty, with empowerment as a goal. This year marks not only the 25th anniversary of Veith House's incorporation, but also the 75th anniversary of the construction of the present building, which until 1969 served as the Halifax Protestant Orphanage. The original orphanage building was destroyed in 1917 by the Halifax Explosion.
