Motorists Urged to Stay Home

Police and Department of Transportation and Public Works officials are urging people to stay home as heavy rainfall throughout the province over the past 24 hours has left many roads flooded and washed out.

The entire provincial road system has been hit hard today with road shoulder erosion, flooding and asphalt wash outs. Areas of particular concern are Cumberland and Digby Counties, where there are numerous reports of road and bridge closures.

Motorists seeking information about local roads should contact the Department of Transportation and Public Works base in their area by calling toll-free 1-888-432-3233. Cellular telephone users can reach the local base by calling #3233.

If people need to drive on the roads, motorists are asked to use extreme caution.
