Governor General's Caring Canadian Award

Bruce Eric Walker and Margaret Marion Walker of Mount Uniacke will receive the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award at a ceremony Tuesday, Sept. 21, at Government House, Halifax.

Lt.-Gov. John James Kinley will make the presentation on behalf of Gov. Gen. Romeo LeBlanc at 4 p.m.

The award is presented to individuals whose unpaid, voluntary contributions provide extraordinary help or care to families or groups in the community. Recipients have served over a number of years and have normally not been previously recognized by a national or provincial honour.

The citation for the recipients follows:

"Bruce and Marion Walker work relentlessly to assist people in need within their community of approximately 1,400 families, including children who are underprivileged or disabled, senior citizens and people who are ill. They helped establish the local Royal Canadian Legion in 1984 and have since been involved in many legion activities and committees, including visiting people who are sick or hospitalized. Among numerous other volunteer activities, they have been actively involved with the Senior Citizens Outreach Program, the Therapeutic Riding Association and their church."

The Caring Canadian Award consists of a certificate and a lapel pin. The award symbol represents Canadians who selflessly give their time and energy to others. The maple leaf symbolizes the people of Canada and their spirit. The heart depicts the open-heartedness of volunteers and care-givers. The helping hand and heart support the maple leaf. The hand is outstretched to portray unlimited generosity.
