Digby Named Winner of Aquaculture Award
The community of Digby has been named this year's winner of the Aquaculture Community Award.
Digby was chosen for its initiatives and determination in growing the aquaculture industry. The award is presented by the provincial Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Ernest Fage said a $1,000 bursary will go to a local student for aquaculture education. A student graduating from the Digby Regional High School next spring will be eligible for the bursary.
"It's our pleasure to honour the people and aquaculture industry in Digby with this recognition," said Mr. Fage. "Aquaculture is one way communities can diversify and provide jobs."
He added since aquaculture is a growing industry in many communities, it's appropriate that the province support a young person's education in the industry.
In announcing the award, Mr. Fage said because it is a community honour, an Aquaculture Harvest Festival will be held to celebrate. It will take place Saturday, Oct. 16, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Digby Centre at the marina.
The festival, being organized with the assistance of the community, will include entertainment, visits to aquaculture site, and for children, a touch tank. Displays illustrating the business of aquaculture will also be part of the program.
A sampling of aquaculture products including halibut, salmon and sea scallops will also be served.
The event will provide an excellent opportunity for people to learn about the world of aquaculture, and admission is free.
This is the second year for the annual award. Last year, the people of Isle Madame received the honour.
