Hamm Discusses Devco with Prime Minister
Premier John Hamm today reported progress on the Devco file, following a meeting in Japan with Prime Minister Jean Chretien.
"The prime minister shared my belief that the sudden closure of Phalen requires a revisiting of the original agreement," said Premier Hamm. "This is a positive first step to ensuring that affected workers receive a fair severance and compensation package."
The premier noted Prime Minister Chretien's concern with the impact of Monday's closure, as well as his recognition of the series of setbacks experienced by Devco workers and their families.
"Their interests must be first and foremost in the negotiation of any new financial settlement," added Premier Hamm.
The premier and prime minister are in Japan this week for a Team Canada trade mission. Upon his return to Nova Scotia next week, Premier Hamm will meet with Senator Al Graham to further discuss the matter.
